You are giving someone a project, not an object. That is the whole thing to get right about this gift, and it is where it succeeds or fails. Given to the right person it is one of the better presents they will get. Given to someone with no free evenings, it is a quiet obligation sitting in a cupboard.
What people actually send

Almost never a landscape. The photographs that come through are the ones with weight in them: a dog that has died, the house somebody grew up in, a wedding photograph, a grandparent, the boat, the farm, the last family gathering where everyone was there.
The reason is straightforward. A stock design is a picture you like. A photograph of your own is a picture you already care about, and spending fifteen hours on it is a different experience entirely.
Who it suits
Good fit: someone who already does something with their hands in the evening. Someone recently retired. Someone who has said they would like to paint and never started. Someone recovering from something, with time and not much to fill it.
Poor fit: someone with young children and no evenings. Someone who reads a to-do list into every gift. Someone who would rather have the finished painting than make it — for them, order it framed and paint it yourself, which is a better gift anyway. What to paint for grandparents narrows it further, since the subject matters more than the format.
Choosing the photograph
This decides more than anything else, and the person receiving it cannot fix a poor choice.
- Send the original file. Detail that is not in the photograph cannot appear on the canvas. Images saved off social media are heavily compressed and lose exactly the detail that matters.
- Light with a direction. Side light gives a face form. Flat overhead light gives a flat face.
- Nothing backlit. The sun behind the subject looks lovely in a photo and turns into a dark shape with a bright rim on canvas. This is the most common reason a custom canvas disappoints.
- One or two faces, not six. Faces need canvas area to carry any likeness. A group photograph becomes a row of small heads.
- A quiet background helps. Busy backgrounds become a field of unrelated small shapes to paint.

Timing
A standard canvas is ten to twenty hours of work spread over a few weeks. Order well ahead of the occasion rather than the week before, and if the gift is meant to be a finished painting rather than a kit, work backwards from the date with real evenings in mind.
December is the busiest point of the year for this category, so the same order placed in October and in mid-December are not the same order.
Practical choices
Buy the framed version for a gift. It arrives stretched on a wooden frame, it is rigid to work on, and it hangs the day the paint dries with nothing further to buy. Unframed arrives rolled in a tube and needs framing afterwards, which is an extra job and an extra cost you are handing over with the present.
Sizes are 12x16, 16x20 and 18x24. Go larger if the photograph has a face in it, and larger again if it has two — the sections are physically bigger at every size up, which makes the detail easier to paint as well as easier to see.
Say what the photograph is. A note with the kit explaining why you chose that picture is the part people keep. The canvas is the occasion for it.
What it is and is not
It is a canvas printed in the United States, on pre-primed cotton, with paints mixed to that specific image and brushes in a range of sizes. It will look like a painting of the photograph rather than a copy of it — fine texture simplifies, subtle color shifts become distinct areas, backgrounds get quieter.
That is the point rather than a shortcoming. A print is a photograph on canvas. A painting is somebody having spent fifteen hours looking at the picture.
If you would rather see what finished ones actually look like before deciding, the customer gallery is photographs from customers in ordinary rooms rather than a studio. The custom canvas is here, and if the person is more likely to want a ready-made design, the catalog has 39 of them.
