How to Paint Space With Acrylic: A Guide for Beginners

A galaxy is one of the few subjects where a beginner can get a genuinely good result on a first attempt. There is no drawing to get right and no perspective to solve. What it takes is the right order of operations, and most people get that order wrong.

This is how to paint space with acrylics: which colors to buy, how to build the background, how to put the stars in last, and the mistakes that turn a promising canvas into mud.

Why Acrylic Suits This Subject

Acrylic dries fast and dries opaque. Both matter here. Fast drying lets you lay one cloud of color over another within minutes instead of waiting days, and opacity is what lets a white star sit on top of a black sky without disappearing into it. Acrylic setting faster than you can work is the other constraint there, and there are ways to slow it down.

It also cleans up with water, which matters more than it sounds when you are working with sponges.

The Colors to Buy

Six will do it.

  • Titanium white. The most important paint on the list. It makes the stars and every highlight, and it needs to be opaque enough to cover in one pass.
  • Ultramarine and phthalo blue. One warm, one cold. The difference between them is most of your depth.
  • Dioxazine purple or magenta. Nebulae live here.
  • A pink. Mixed from magenta and white if you would rather not buy one.
  • Black. Use it sparingly, and read the next paragraph before you do.

Do not paint the sky in straight black. Flat black reads as a hole rather than as distance, and it kills everything glazed over it. Mix your darks instead: ultramarine with a little burnt umber, or purple with a touch of black, gives you something that is nearly black but still has color in it. Photographs of space are full of very dark blues and browns, and almost never of pure black.

Silver and gold are worth having if you like a metallic sheen on the stars, but they are optional and easy to overdo.

Tools

  • A sponge. The main tool for the background. A natural sea sponge gives a more irregular edge than a synthetic one, which is worth the extra cost on this subject specifically. A torn-up kitchen sponge works.
  • A flat brush for laying the base coat.
  • A fine round brush for the larger stars and any planets.
  • An old toothbrush for spattering the star field. This is the one tool nobody expects and everybody ends up using.
  • Canvas, stretched or board. Give it a coat of gesso if it is not primed.

Building the Background

Work dark to light, in thin layers, and resist the urge to blend everything smooth.

  1. Base coat. Cover the canvas in your mixed dark with a flat brush. Let it dry fully.
  2. Decide where the light is. A galaxy needs somewhere brighter and somewhere emptier, usually a diagonal band across the canvas. Decide now, because everything after this reinforces it.
  3. First color. Damp the sponge, load a little paint, and blot most of it off on scrap paper before it touches the canvas. Dab, do not wipe. Light pressure, and leave gaps.
  4. Build up. Add the next color partly over the first while the edges are still workable, so the two mingle rather than sit side by side. Three or four passes with a rinse between colors.
  5. Lighten the center. Add white to your brightest color and sponge it only through the band you chose in step two. Keep the edges of the canvas dark.

Two things to avoid. Do not go back over the whole canvas with your lightest color at the end — it flattens everything you have built. And do not blend until the transitions are perfectly smooth; the texture left by the sponge is what reads as gas and dust.

Stars, Last

Stars go on after the background is completely dry, and never before.

The field. Thin white paint to the consistency of milk, load a toothbrush, and flick the bristles with your thumb from about a foot away. Practice on newspaper first, because the first flick always throws more paint than you expect. Mask off anything you want to keep clear.

The bright ones. Dot a dozen or so with a fine brush, varying the size. Real star fields are uneven, so cluster them rather than spacing them out.

The trick that sells it. Put a faint halo of pale blue or pink around three or four of the brightest stars, then a smaller pure-white dot in the middle. That halo is the difference between spattered paint and a sky.

Nebulae

A nebula is a cloud, so paint it like one: soft edges, no outline, and lighter at the center than at the rim.

Sponge the color in loosely, then take a clean damp sponge and lift some of it back off while it is still wet. That subtraction is what gives the cloud its wispy edge. Layer light over dark, a little at a time. Pink over purple over deep blue is the reliable combination.

Planets, the Sun and the Moon

These want a different approach from the background, because they have a defined edge.

A planet. Paint a flat circle in the base color and let it dry. Add the lit side with a lighter tone of the same color, keeping the light coming from the same direction as everywhere else on the canvas. Leave the far edge dark. Bands and markings go on last, curved to follow the sphere.

The sun. Lay a pale yellow disc, then work orange and red outward from the center while it is wet so the edge glows rather than stops. A white core last.

The moon. A white disc, then gray shadow across one side, then a few soft gray circles for craters. Keep the craters irregular and do not draw them as rings.

Four Galaxies Worth Painting

Each of these has a different shape, which matters more than the palette you choose.

  • The Milky Way. Seen from inside, so it reads as a band of dense stars across the sky with dark dust lanes cutting through it. The easiest to paint convincingly and the best first attempt.
  • Andromeda. A spiral seen at a steep angle, so it appears as a long ellipse with a bright, concentrated core and faint arms fading at the ends.
  • The Pinwheel. Face-on, arms sweeping out symmetrically from the center. Harder, because the spiral has to look loose rather than drawn with a compass.
  • The Whirlpool. A face-on spiral with a small companion galaxy caught at the end of one arm. That companion is what makes it recognizable.

Making It Look Finished

  • Prime the surface. Raw canvas drinks the paint and the darks go patchy.
  • Thin layers, more of them. Depth on this subject comes from stacking, not from loading the brush.
  • Work quickly while blending. Acrylic skins over in minutes. A little water, or a slow-drying line, buys you time.
  • Stop before you tidy it. Space is irregular. Evening out the blotches is the most common way people ruin a galaxy that was already working.
  • Varnish it. A satin varnish evens out the patchy sheen you get from mixing thick and thin passes.

Paints Worth the Money

Craft-store acrylics are perfectly good for this. Coverage matters more than pigment load when most of the canvas is dark, and a sponge does not care what it is holding. If you want to spend more, three are worth it:

  • Liquitex Professional. Heavily pigmented, wide range, and available in fluorescent and iridescent colors that suit this subject specifically.
  • Golden OPEN. Deliberately slow-drying. If your blends keep going tacky before you finish them, this is the fix.
  • Winsor & Newton Professional. Strong color saturation and reliable across surfaces.

Buy the white in the largest tube you can. You will get through it faster than any other color.
