A wedding photograph on canvas works as a gift for a specific reason: the couple already has the photographs. What they do not have is a version of one that took someone twenty hours.
Two quite different gifts sit under this heading, and they suit different people. Worth being clear which one you are giving.

The two versions
Give the kit. The couple paints it themselves. This suits people who like making things, and it is a good first-anniversary present — twenty hours together over a few weeks, with something on the wall at the end.
Give it finished. You paint it and hand over the canvas. This is the heavier gift, because the hours are the thing being given. It is also a month of your evenings, so it needs planning.
Custom Ledgebay canvases are printed in the USA and ship with three brushes.
Choosing the photograph, which decides everything
Wedding photography is mostly the wrong shape for this format, so this needs care. A numbered conversion reduces the image to flat regions of a limited palette. Some photographs survive that well; most group shots do not.
Works:
- Two people, close, filling most of the frame
- Even light — overcast, open shade, window light
- A clear silhouette against a simple background
- The first-look shot, or the quiet one from the end of the evening
Does not work:
- The full wedding party. Eight small faces means eight sets of tiny sections and none of them will be right.
- Harsh midday sun, which blows out a white dress into a single flat shape with no form in it
- Dark reception photographs, or anything shot on a phone in a dim venue
- Lace and beadwork at a distance. Beautiful detail, unpaintable at this scale.
- Anyone small in the frame
The white dress deserves a warning of its own. In a well-lit photograph a dress has shadow and form and converts into several distinct pale tones. In a flash-lit one it is a white shape, and it will paint as a white shape.
Practical notes
- Go large. Faces need area. This is the format's hardest subject and canvas size is the main lever you have.
- Crop before sending. You know what matters in the picture. Bring the couple up in the frame.
- Send the original file, from the photographer if you have it — not a social-media download or a screenshot.
- Framed for a gift. It arrives stretched on wooden bars and hangs on a nail. An unframed canvas hands the recipient a job.
- Start early if you are painting it. Ten to twenty hours plus a week of shipping. For a December date, order in October.
Set the expectation, ideally out loud
It will look like a painting of the photograph, not a reproduction of it. Soft gradations become defined areas; a face acquires a slight stylisation. Most people find that is exactly what makes it feel handmade rather than printed — but it is worth saying when you hand it over, rather than letting someone compare it to the original and be puzzled.
Common questions
What is the best wedding photo for a custom canvas?
Two people, close together, in soft even light, filling most of the frame. Avoid group shots and anything lit by flash in a dark room.
How long does one take to paint?
Ten to twenty hours depending on size and how busy the photograph is. Portraits sit at the longer end.
Is this a good first-anniversary gift?
It is one of the better ones, particularly given as a kit — the couple gets the project rather than just the object.
Will the white dress come out well?
It depends entirely on the light in the photograph. A dress with visible shadow and form converts into several pale tones and looks right. A flash-lit dress converts into one flat white shape.
