Colorful House Near the Lake is a paint by numbers kit for adults, taken from Image World's painting of a flower-filled porch above a spring lake.

A stone-and-timber porch fills the left of the canvas, hung with baskets of flowers and an old lantern, with a white cat asleep on the rail. A yellow bicycle with a basket of pink blooms leans against the steps. Out on the flagstones a wicker rocker and a small table are set with bread and a folded blanket, a swan crosses the water, and a log cabin sits under blossoming trees on the far bank with a snow-capped peak behind. Image World designs are drawn for painting rather than adapted from a print. Choosing a size

The framed 12x16 and framed 16x20 arrive pre-stretched on a wooden frame, ready to hang the moment you put the brush down. No mounting, no separate frame to buy. The unframed 16x20 gives you the same canvas and the same paints for less. It is trimmed close to the printed edge, so it suits taping or mounting to a board rather than stretching over your own frame.

Will I be able to see the numbers?

The 16x20 is the easier of the two sizes on the eyes, and the 11" x 17" printout means you can check a section without leaning over the canvas. Most people paint with a lamp pulled close and reading glasses on. For the finest sections a magnifier helps, and plenty of our customers keep one on the table.

Who it suits

The brightest kit we sell and the one to pick for a sunny room. It is also busy: hydrangeas, daisies and geraniums fill the whole foreground in small numbered petals. Common questions

Do I need any painting experience?
None. Every section is printed with a number that matches a numbered pot, so there is no drawing, no color mixing and nothing to work out in advance. Start with the biggest areas and work down.

How long does Colorful House Near the Lake take?
Most people spend 10 to 20 hours on a 16x20, a bit at a time over a few weeks. There is no rush and nothing spoils if you leave it a while.

Some of the colors look very similar. How do I keep them straight?
Work by number rather than by area. Fill every section marked with one number across the whole canvas before opening the next pot, and the near-identical greens never end up side by side in the wrong place.

What if a color runs low or dries out?
There is a matching replacement paint set for this design, so a dried pot never ends the project. If a pot has only thickened, a drop of water and a stir usually brings it back.

  • Work from the top down. Painting downward keeps your hand off sections you have just finished, which is the most common way a canvas gets smudged.
  • Finish one color everywhere before moving to the next. Every section marked 4, then every 5. It uses less paint, means less brush cleaning, and the painting comes together faster than working area by area.
  • Two thin coats beat one thick one. Pale colors in particular will let the printed number show through on the first pass. Let it dry and go over it again rather than loading the brush heavily.
  • Keep the reference print beside you. Every kit includes a full-size 11 x 17 print. The numbers on the canvas are small, and the finest sections are much easier under a good lamp, with a magnifier if you use one for reading.
  • If the paint thickens, add a single drop of water. Stir it in and close the pot firmly between sittings. Acrylic dries fast once it is open to the air.
  • Stock designs. 12 x 16 framed, 16 x 20 framed, or 16 x 20 unframed.
  • Custom kits from your own photo. 12 x 16, 16 x 20 or 18 x 24, framed or unframed.
  • How long it takes. A few evenings if you paint steadily, or a few weeks treated as a relaxed hobby. The more detailed designs take considerably longer than the open ones, which is worth knowing before you pick.
  • A pre-printed cotton canvas. It ships rolled in a tube rather than folded, so it arrives without a crease through the middle. Framed or unframed, depending on the option you choose above.
  • A complete set of acrylic paints. Numbered to match the canvas and vacuum-sealed, so they arrive workable rather than dried out.
  • Brushes in a range of sizes. Enough to cover the broad areas and pick out the finer sections without swapping tools constantly.
  • An 11 x 17 reference print. A full-size copy of the numbered canvas, which is a good deal easier to read than the canvas itself.
  • A color photograph of the finished painting. So you can see where the piece is heading before you start.
  • An easel, with the framed sizes. The unframed option does not include one.

    They Don't Match The Original Colours

    At first I thought I made a mistake. I even returned the first set. Then this set came labeled, as you can see in the first photo. The second photo shows you the colours in the new set . The third is a photo of the paints that came with my paint by numbers kit. Both my original kit and the new paints are labeled " Colourful House Near The Lake." So, here goes: I love this brand. I've been using them for years. Their stretched canvases are high quality. The paints usually smooth and consistent.The only constant complaint I've had has been with the cheap paint brushes, but I simply use my own.However, when you are going to offer a replacement, it needs to be a viable replacement. If you're going to change the colours, then offer both in the replacements.I'm stuck trying to mix my own to finish this painting. Not helpful.

    Fun, Educational, Worth It.

    Loved everything about this color by number. This was my first but not my last. I have no experience with painting & thought this would give me some introduction. It was fun to complete. Very intricate in some areas for which ended up purchasing a tiny paint brush for. The brushes that come with this are not the highest quality but they'll do the job if you take care of them. So I learned how to take care of brushes, keep paint from drying out and how to put the paint on the canvas in the way I intend it - this was a challenge. This took me a while to complete. I would estimate about 4 hours altogether over several days. It was relaxing and meditative as well as challenging at times. Only one suggestion to improve this product is to include the drawing with the numbers so you can use it for reference when numbers are not visible or get covered up. I really messed up the beak and only have the picture to refer to. The colors are very similar so it's hard to tell which colors to use without the numbers but mostly I need to know the shape of the area to paint. Overall, this was a great purchase and a good price.

    Cool setup

    The quality of the color by numbers plan is actually quite good. The movement of the lines is spot-on, and the choices for colors and sectioning is cleverly done to create a relatively faithful rendition that is still doable for a paint-by-numbers version. Super fun!

    The picture did turn out well.

    Some of the colors were too close to each other so there was hard to see some of the nuances in shades. The 2 yellows were too similar. The black and dark brown were too similar also.I bought a 16x20 frame to stretch picture and the picture was about 1/4 inch smaller so it left a white border. I had to extend all the colors to the edge beyond the line.
