A color by number maker is a piece of software that takes an image and turns it into a numbered outline. Upload a photo, choose how many colors, and it returns a line drawing with a number in every shape and a key down the side.
They are genuinely useful and they are also frequently oversold. Here is what one actually gives you, what it does not, and how to tell a good result from a bad one before you commit an evening to it.
What Happens Under the Hood

Two steps, and understanding them tells you most of what you need to know.
First it reduces the colors. Your photo might contain tens of thousands of distinct shades. The tool sorts them into a fixed number of groups, twelve or twenty or thirty depending on your setting, and replaces every pixel with its group's color. This is called posterizing, and it is the step that turns a smooth sky into three flat bands.
Then it draws the boundaries. Wherever one group meets another it draws a line, and puts that group's number inside the shape.
That is the whole process. There is no judgment in it. The tool does not know which part of the picture is a face and which is a curtain, so it spends detail evenly across both.
The Settings That Decide Everything
Number of colors
The one that matters most. Somewhere between twelve and twenty-four is the workable range.
Below twelve, faces flatten into masks and the image stops being recognizable. Above twenty-four, you are creating more distinct paint mixes than any human wants to manage, and many of them will be almost identical to each other anyway.
If a tool defaults to forty or fifty, turn it down before you look at anything else.
Smoothing or noise reduction
Photographs contain grain, and without smoothing the tool faithfully turns every speck into its own tiny numbered region. The result is a fog of unpaintable dots across what should be a clean area of sky.
If your output looks like static, this is the setting to raise.
Minimum region size
Some tools let you discard shapes below a certain size, merging them into whatever surrounds them. This is the single most useful option available and many tools do not offer it. If yours does, use it. A region you cannot fit a brush into is not a region, it is a nuisance.
Output size
Set this to the actual size you will paint at, not to whatever the default is. A design generated for a small canvas has sections sized for that canvas. Blowing it up afterward gives you soft, ragged lines.
How to Judge the Output
Three checks, in this order, before you print anything.
Look at the flat-color version at arm's length. Before the outlines, look at the posterized image itself. If you cannot tell what it is from a few feet away, no amount of careful painting will rescue it. Go back and try a different photo or a tighter crop rather than pushing on.
Zoom into the busiest area. Usually hair, foliage or a patterned fabric. If it has dissolved into hundreds of slivers, either raise the smoothing or accept that this photo does not suit the format.
Count how many colors are near-identical. Look at the key. If numbers seven, eight and nine are three barely different browns, you are going to be squinting at pots all evening. Reduce the color count and regenerate.
The Three Things a Generator Cannot Give You
This is where the gap between a template and a kit lives.
Paint. The tool gives you color values on a screen. Turning those into physical acrylic means mixing perhaps twenty specific colors, matching each to a number, mixing enough of each to cover its area twice, and keeping all twenty usable over the several weeks a painting takes. Acrylic dries in minutes in open air. This is the step that stops most home projects, and no software solves it.

The outline on canvas. A printed template is on paper. Getting those lines onto canvas means a projector, transfer paper, or the grid method, and any of them is an evening's work before you have painted anything.
Judgment about the picture. A generator will happily process a photo that was never going to work: a dark subject on a dark background, a group shot where every face is an inch across, a backlit silhouette. It has no opinion. You have to have one.
When a Generator Is the Right Tool
Use one if the process itself appeals to you, if you want total control of the palette, if you are working small, or if you are curious how a picture reduces and want to see it. It is a genuinely interesting thing to play with and it teaches you to see a photo as flat shapes, which is useful whatever you paint.
Do not bother if what you want is a few weeks of quiet evenings with a brush. Spending the first two of them on transfer paper and airtight pots is the opposite of the reason most people take this up.
